Summary
Food Fortification Initiative (FFI) leaders conducted a high-level advocacy visit to Ankara, Türkiye, to present research findings, cost-benefit analyses, and national micronutrient assessments to key Turkish stakeholders. Meeting with representatives from the GIFT/Nutrition Institute, Lokman Hekim University, the Turkish Spina Bifida Association, and the Ministry of Agriculture, the delegation focused on assessing readiness and building a multi-sector coalition to mandate wheat flour fortification. Discussions highlighted the necessity of gaining support from academics and industry, navigating local food policy dynamics, and utilizing data on birth defect rates and health economics. Crucially, the Ministry of Agriculture expressed support for establishing wheat flour fortification standards and indicated plans to initiate a dedicated working group to advance fortification policy.
