Summary
In May 2025, a joint SADC-FFI mission and national inter-ministerial team conducted a rapid assessment across Namibia to guide the transition from voluntary to mandatory food fortification. The assessment targeted key staple foods—wheat flour, maize flour, mahangu (pearl millet) flour, and edible oil—and engaged stakeholders across all major crop-producing zones and salt operations (such as Walvis Bay Salt Works).
The consultations addressed critical industry priorities, including high premix import costs, local laboratory testing constraints, small-miller protections, and consumer awareness. Working in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) and UNICEF, FFI is finalizing an updated national fortification strategy, costed operational plan, and monitoring framework aligned with regional SADC minimum standards.
