Summary
FFI participated in the International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM) South Asia Conference, where Dr. Parveen Bhalla, FFI India Project Lead, presented on the role of food fortification in improving nutrition across South Asia. The session highlighted the burden of micronutrient deficiencies, the health and economic benefits of fortifying staple foods, and opportunities to strengthen wheat flour and rice fortification programs throughout the region.
The presentation also showcased evidence from FFI’s work in India, including the Haryana Demonstration Project, and provided an overview of the current status of fortification programs and opportunities for expansion across South Asian countries. The session reinforced the importance of collaboration among governments, millers, and development partners to build sustainable, evidence-based fortification programs that improve public health.
