Rice

The volume of rice available for human consumption increased by 1% in 2025, and the volume of industrially processed rice increased by 6%. However, the volume of fortified rice decreased. This difference of about 4 million tons is due to a change in the amount of fortified rice that India reported distributing through the state-operated social protection program in 2025. With this reduction and considering only countries that are good opportunities for rice fortification, we estimate that 10.9% of industrially milled rice is fortified.The 2024 adjusted volume of rice available for human consumption and the volume of industrially milled rice slightly increased from 2023. However, largely due to the Indian Government’s continued effort to fortify rice distributed through social protection programs, there was a 36% increase in the amount of fortified rice available. This increase of nearly 10 million tons of fortified rice results in an estimated 11.4% of the global industrially processed rice supply being fortified (unadjusted).

When considering only countries with a good opportunity for rice fortification (adjusted), FFI estimates that 13.2% of industrially milled rice is fortified, up from 9.7% in 2024.
