According to FAO data, the amount of maize available for human consumption increased by 5% from 2024 to 2025, with over 5 million additional metric tons in the global food supply. FFI estimates that the proportion of industrially milled maize is 4 million metric tons less than in 2024. However, the decrease is largely due to new information about the use of maize for human vs livestock consumption in Poland. While Poland is a major producer of maize (almost 9 million tons for this data year), only 10% of production is used for human consumption.
Globally, the volume of industrially processed and fortified maize flour increased by around 400,000 metric tons, but the reduced estimate of industrially processed maize flour means the amount of fortified maize flour increased from 27.3% to 31.7%.
When focusing on countries that FFI considers a good opportunity for maize flour fortification, the supply of maize flour increased by 8%, but less maize flour was industrially processed (32.3% versus 36.5% last year). An additional 500,000 metric tons of maize flour were fortified, bringing the estimated share of industrially milled maize flour fortified to any level to 41.9%.
