The Challenge

The global health burden of vitamin and mineral deficiencies is profound. A third of the world’s population—over 2 billion people—are affected by vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

The Opportunity

A 2019 study found that 62,670 birth defects of the brain and spine were prevented in one year due to flour being fortified with folic acid—an average of 172 healthier babies every day.

COVID-19 and Fortification

More than ever, food fortification with iron, folic acid, zinc, and other essential nutrients is a life-saving intervention vital to reducing the risk of malnutrition—before, during, and after pandemics.

According to estimates, an
additional 82% of birth defects
of the brain and spine and 34%
of anemia could still be preven
ted globally through adequate
intake of iron and folic acid.

More needs to be done.
