76 Mandatory Countries
Currently 76 countries have mandatory legislation to fortify wheat flour with at least iron or folic acid. The combined population of the current 76 countries is 2.2 billion. The most recent global map showing countries with mandatory fortification is on the FFI website. It can be downloaded for your use as an image or Power Point.
Azerbaijan Revitalizes Flour Fortification Discussions
Discussions about mandatory flour fortification in Azerbaijan were revitalized last year after a delegation visited Costa Rica to learn about the processes and success of food fortification there. To support the renewed efforts, a team from FFI and UNICEF visited Azerbaijan in April to conduct a milling assessment for flour fortification.
According to Azerbaijan’s Demographic Health Survey (2006), the prevalence of anemia in children 12-59 months and women of reproductive age is approaching severe status as classified by the World Health Organization. In addition, the birth prevalence of neural tube defects is believed to be one of the highest in the region.
Thank You Bill!
Bill Dietz retired in June from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) where he served as Director of the Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity and Obesity. During his tenure there, he embraced work with international nutrition and was a champion for flour fortification. He has spoken to groups as an advocate of flour fortification since at least 2003. He served on the FFI Executive Management Team (EMT) until 2010.
Bill was recognized during the EMT meeting in May 2012 when Venkatesh Mannar, President of the Micronutrient Initiative, said that the CDC being among FFI’s initial partners gave credibility to the network. Bob Baldwin, FFI Senior Advisor, noted that Bill explained the consequences of vitamin and mineral deficiencies in terms that everyone could understand. Nick Alipui, UNICEF Director of Programs, said Bill was part of the “connecting tissue” that provided leadership and vision to the network.
“You give me more credit than I deserve,” Bill replied. “What makes the network effective is all of you. This is clearly one of the most effective public-private partnerships that exists.”

Photos from India, China, Executive Management Team meeting, and regional workshops in Turkey
Some of our work for the last few months is best stated in pictures. See these photos on Flickr:
- To better understand how to move forward in India, we have been gathering state-specific information on food consumption, anemia, birth defects, and the milling industry. See photos from some of the state visits.
- In June we joined efforts with UNICEF to host two regional workshops in Ankara, Turkey. The first was for individuals focused on the scientific aspects of fortification while the second was geared towards representatives of flour milling companies, government ministries and inspection agencies. The event brought together 100 people from 10 countries in the region. See photos.
- In late June we met with flour fortification advocates in China.
- The FFI Executive Management Team (EMT) meeting in early May.
